Wells Book Arts Center

Continues the fine-printing tradition begun by Victor Hammer, who founded the Wells College Press in 1941. The center holds an extensive collection of letterpress equipment including Victor Hammer's Washington-style hand press, Vandercook presses and hundreds of cases of type.


About the press

The Wells Book Arts Center continues the fine-printing tradition established by Victor Hammer, who operated the Wells College Press from 1941 until 1948. Following Wells College's closure in 2024, the center and its collection of printing presses, type, bindery and papermaking equipment are moving to Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, which will continue its programming.
