Scripps College Press

A teaching letterpress at Scripps College where students hand-set metal type and letterpress-print collaborative limited-edition artists' books, typically in editions of about 100 copies, each semester. The press uses the exclusive Scripps College Old Style typeface designed for it by Frederic W. Goudy in 1941.

About the press

Founded in 1941 as an experimental typographic laboratory, the Scripps College Press teaches letterpress printing and book arts in Claremont, California. Under Kitty Maryatt's direction from 1986 a program of collaborative student-made artists' book editions developed, with students writing, designing, hand-setting type, printing and binding each edition. The press also sponsors the biannual Frederic W. Goudy Lecture series.
